Dhol Tasha
Moraya Dhol Tasha Pathak (MDTP) was established in 2013 with a modest setup of 3 Dhols, 2 Tashas, and 1 Dhwaj, supported by a team of six members. Today, it has expanded to over 90+ members, ranging in age from 5 to 55, with an impressive ensemble of 35 Dhols, 15 Tashas, 35 Zanjha sets, and 10 Dhwajs. The group has also seen a notable increase in women participants over the years.
Deeply ingrained in the culture of Maharashtra’s Ganesh Festival, the tradition of Dhol-Tasha involves disciplined and synchronized performances during the ten-day Ganeshotsav, especially for the installation (*Prathisthapana*) and immersion (*Visarjan*) processions. This practice fosters unity and inclusivity, embracing participants of all ages, genders, and backgrounds without discrimination.
Playing Dhol-Tasha demands energy, stamina, coordination, and dedicated practice, much like any rigorous sport. Once used as “Rana-Vadya” or battle instruments in pre-independence India, these traditional instruments now symbolize cultural pride and auspiciousness during festive celebrations.
